I took this photo in Collioure, on the jetty. I liked the spikes and their rusty and crusty look against the blue of the Mediterranean.

Blog moderation, spam and passwords
Some time ago, of A Little Red Hen posted about blog moderation and we exchanged mails about that. I said that I was willing to put up with captcha, you know those letters and numbers you have to type to prove you are not a robot trying to spam, although sometimes, they are difficult to read. I am also accepting to be ‘other’ on my blogger-friends who use blogger.
I use WordPress and can moderate comments, although I find it annoying. However, I have had to do it on my French blog, as someone viciously started to post obscene comments on that blog. So I have been moderating each and every comment.
I’m even willing to register on some blogs, as long as I can remain logged in. Now when I am asked to register to obtain a typekey or whatever account, remember a password, anything that cannot be done in a couple of clicks, there stops my good will.
I get my share of spam like everyone else, WordPress has plugins that catches most of them, but I will not allow spammers to make me close my blog to commenters. Moderating is one thing, but getting a message like
Comments are moderated, and will not appear on this weblog until the author has approved them.
This weblog only allows comments from registered users. To comment, please Sign In.
then being taken to a page to create an umpteenth account with a username and a password, no thank you! I am sorry, but I will not comment, and probably will eventually stop reading the blog.
A word I always forget
Do you have words you can never remember the meaning of? I do. One of these words is sheepish. For some reason, I am never quite sure what it means. I have to look it up in the dictionary every time I come across it.
Merriam-Webster says:
1 : resembling a sheep in meekness, stupidity, or timidity
2 : affected by or showing embarrassment caused by consciousness of a fault
- sheep·ish·ly adverb
- sheep·ish·ness noun
And why would sheep be meek, stupid or timid?
My Robert and Collins says penaud. However, I can see how you would feel sheepish / penaud, but not how you would LOOK sheepish / penaud.
It must be the sheep contained in sheepish that bothers me
It’s really strange, because I used to read through, ignoring the words I didn’t understand, as long as they didn’t prevent me from understanding the general meaning of what I was reading, but now, I often take the time to stop and look for words.
Am I getting old?
Ronni Bennett did me the honour of publishing one of my stories, with slight changes at The Elder Storytelling Place. I hope you’ll go and read it there

The Night of the Hunter
Joared‘s post, More Movies reminded me of The Night of the Hunter, a 1955 film noir directed by Charles Laughton. One of my favourite movies ever. Charles Laughton, best known for his acting, only directed another movie, The Man on the Eiffel Tower, which I don’t think I have ever seen. Have you?
If it is anything like The Night of the Hunter, it is certainly an interesting and unusual movie.
I have watched The Night of the Hunter in its entirety quite a few times and every time I am amazed at how good it is. The use of black and white is remarkable, I think it’s Robert Mitchum‘s best performance ever, and Lilian Gish, an actress from the time of the silent movies, is also remarkable.
My grandfather on my mother’s side owned a cinema in his native town, Slonim, and my mother used to have loads of photos of famous actors and actresses from that era. I mentioned once Gloria Swanson, but I remember distinctly photos of Lilian Gish in the bunch of photos that got lost while I was moving from my old place to the place I currently live in.
If you are interested in The Night of the Hunter, don’t miss Gloria’s Rooting for Laughton , it is indeed full of interesting info about Charles Laughton
