Steaming away to the coast

What a splendid day we had, yesterday. Friends Leo and Elly had suggested a trip along former British Railway line from Holt to Sheringham. We started off pretty early in the morning as the departing station is not all that close to Norwich. The whole operation is kept by volunteers, From the gentleman who sold us our return tickets, to the conductor who checked them on the train, or the train operator (not sure of the term to be used). We took a diesel operated train on the way over to Sherigham, and I was surprised to see that some stops were request stops.
When we got to Sheringham, there was a steam engine, getting ready for her trip. Several men were loading coal into the furnace and checking that everything was in order, and what really got me was the noise it made.

It reminded me of the times when all trains had steam engines and when we’d be full of grime, when we arrived home. And trains made a distinctive noise in those days, which I heard again yesterday.
Sheringham is a charming seaside resort, fun to walk around, and full of squircles just waiting for us to be photographed ;)
Had a beans on toast sandwich for lunch, something that I do every time I come to England, as it always reminds me of my first trips to England when I stayed with the people who made me love England and English from the start.
On the way back, we took that steam train we had seen on the way over and visited the William Marriott museum
Then we drove back to Holt, where we visited the Parish Church of St Andrew, the Apostle, an impressive church with beautiful stained glass windows. We also spent time in a very interesting cemetery, where a lot more photos were taken.
Finally, we enjoyed cream tea in a very nice tea-room which added a lovely ending to a wonderful day
And thanks to Leo and Elly for the help with the links and urls
