Five Little Ducks

Five 5 little ducks,
Went out one day,
Over the hill and far away.
Mother duck said,
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only four 4 little ducks came back.
Ducklings at Fountains Abbey

These fledglings at Fountains Abbey were trying to climb back to their Mum. We watched them for quite a while. As more of her ducklings were upstream, she kept calling for those four, but they couldn’t climb back.
I wonder what happened.

Castle Howard

Having for the first time used up 100% of my uploads for this month to flickr, and the weather being awful, I watched Brideshead Revisited, a 13-hours series shot in Castle Howard, Yorkshire, which I visited a few weeks ago. The series (now four DVDs) was completed in 1981, after Evelyn Waugh’s novel, Brideshead Revisited, starring Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews and Diana Quick, with special guest stars like Laurence Olivier, Claire Bloom and John Gielgud. I really enjoyed the series, the setting is magnificent, the music beautiful and the acting superb. I have never read the book though and am not sure I’d like to read it after seeing the series. Some series make me want to read some more, but I guess that 13 hours did the job ;)
I liked the atmosphere and found the characters really interesting and I particularly enjoyed revisiting Castle Howard and seeing some of the places we didn’t have time to visit. If you get a chance, you won’t regret seeing it. It kept me quite busy these last few days.

Fountains Abbey

Fountains AbbeyFountains Abbey, Yorkshire

We liked Fountains Abbey so much that we went twice. Not only is it beautiful, but it has huge grounds and the first time, we didn’t get to the deer park.
We started our first visit in the rain, but soon, the weather changed so we were lucky to see the Abbey both in the rain and in the sun. At one point, when the rain stopped a cloud of mist rose, giving the site a mysterious aspect.
Between the river and the forest, Fountains Abbey is just gorgeous.
On our second visit, it was quite hot and sunny and we walked to the Deer Park, expecting to see maybe a couple of deer far away. Not so. There were lots of them and although we didn’t get very close to them, I managed quite a few photos.

Weather report in Nantes…

Looking up at the skySome flowers for Milt

Those flowers were looking up at the sky. The weather that afternoon was beautiful in Nantes and so was the Jardin des Plantes.

You want to read Ronni’s post about Milt from Milt’s Muse. As I created the link, I remembered that his blog had been deleted. I miss his wisdom and his Idaho Falls weather reports. And what a pity not being able to go back to certain posts about dealing with pain. I never thought of saving his blog and am sorry it didn’t occur to me.
Wherever you are, Milt, I am sending you these flowers through the blogosphere.

Joared’s comments at Ronni’s blog

I, too, hope Milt continues to receive the message, that though his blog is offline, he is still in all our thoughts.
I have felt genuine, sincere, interest and concern for Milt’s well being, though I’ve known him only through contact made soon after he started his blog.
I share with all of you the hope that we will learn how he is doing, or if in fact, the removal of his blog has some symbolic meaning.
Thank you, Ronni, for a well-written tribute, that I suspect Milt would not think was small at all.
Weather Report from Los Angeles
It’s been a beautiful, mostly clear and sunny day here in the Los Angeles area. The winds have been calm. It’s been the kind of day you might want to seek some shade, after you’ve spent some time on the other side of the window.

A detail of Nantes CathedralAngels over the door

I had to go to Nantes on Monday to retrieve my parents’ birth certificates required for obtaining a passport (birth certificates of people being born abroad are kept in Nantes) –I will blog in more detail about getting my passport, when the whole thing is done and over with.
Although the morning was wet and dreary, the afternoon’s weather was much better and I enjoyed visiting the Cathedral and Jardin des Plantes.
What looked at first like a chore, turned out to be avery pleasant day. As I was coming back from my passport errand in the pouring rain, I stopped at the Cathedral and was treated to an organ concert. I also enjoyed a very interesting tour of the place with a remarkable guide. I had lunch with my friend Liliane at La Cigale, one of Nantes oldest brasseries, we discovered Passage Pommeray and then went to Jardin des Plantes.
